“So to all the people watching, I can never ever thank you enough for the kindness to me and I’ll think about it for the rest of my life. And all I ask is one thing, and I’m asking this particularly of young people that watch: please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism. For the record, it’s my least favorite quality. It doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.”

John Mayer - Free Falling

& I’m free falling. Oh, I’m gonna leave this world for a while.

It’s dead week here in the world of higher academia and I’m sure I’m not the only feeling the pains, stresses, and pressure of the coming week. Sometimes it feels as if the next two weeks are never going to end while at the same time it feel as if our finals and paper due dates are coming up too quickly. Today, in the midst of the deadlines and stress, take the time to just leave this hectic world for a while. Grab a friend and have a conversation for ten minutes. Sit in the dark and listen to your favorite, most carefree song. Take a thirty minute break and watch your favorite show. Do something that’ll relieve the stresses and hardships that come with finals and the end of the school year. Remember that there are things bigger and more important than these tests and papers; the world won’t end if you don’t get an A on your paper. You can only do your best and know that no matter what the result is, you did the best you could.

So, I leave you with one of my favorite carefree songs. It’s a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’”. Enjoy.

What do you ask for in return for the things that you do?When you help someone with their homework, do you expect them to keep tabs and help you out when you need it? When you help a friend get through a difficult time, do you do it expecting that they’ll repay you? When you do something out of your way for someone else, do you hold that over their heads for the rest of eternity? What are the real motivations behind your actions? Are you doing something for the right reasons? Are you helping people out for the recognition? For the glory? With the expectation that they now have a debt to be repaid? It seems like this is a common theme in society today: I scratch your back, you scratch mine. But what if we went about life from a different point of view? What if we decided that we weren’t going to do things because we expect something in return? Instead, what if we decided that from now on, we’d do things for other people because it was the right thing to do? Instead of expecting something in return, what if we did something selflessly with no need for retribution? Today I challenge you to do something kind or something that’s right without the need for retribution or recognition. The world would easily become a better place if we all just did our small part.

the initiation of flight (via brookeshaden)

I know you want to fly away from the world, but for now with the time we’ve got … Let’s just get away.
Sometimes it feels like life is coming at us from all sides. This doesn’t go right, that doesn’t go right; luck’s just not on your side. It’s easy to want to quit and leave it all behind. This is too tough; there are other things you could be doing that wouldn’t leave you feeling so angry or frustrated. But how does that saying go?
“Nothing worth having in life comes easily.”
Instead of running away and turning your back on something forever; something you may regret in the near future, why not take a break and get away for a night? Leave all of your worries behind. Don’t worry about the paper due on Wednesday; don’t worry about what other people are going to say about your disappearance for a night. Remember that it’s okay to take a moment for yourself; remember that everyone does it. You can’t always go at life full speed; sometimes it’s necessary to take a break and recuperate every once in a while. Breathe, relax. Enjoy your life. After all, it’s the only one you’ve got.

Tangled Up - Jesse Barrera

Hello, what a wonderful life…

When was the last time you were free to get truly tangled up in something that you love? I guess the real question is not whether you’re free to get tangled up, rather, it’s whether you make time to get tangled up in something that you love. Getting tangled up in something that you love doesn’t require you to free up an entire day. Often, it’s the little moments that mean the most and from which we learn that life really is wonderful. Why not take the time to get tangled up in something you love?

Nothing ever comes into this world as perfect. Even the most inspirational speeches take a lot of reworking before they reach the moment when they’re fit for the ears of an eager audience. And even then, they aren’t perfect. Being great takes work and it starts with realizing that there’s room for improvement. At the same time, being great is about finding a balance between wanting to better and accepting that who we are is good enough. It’s often said that we’re our own worst critics, and it’s true. It’s always good to desire to be better, but there comes a point when you have to believe that you’re already enough. People may view you as something or other and it’s important to realize and understand how people view you, but you have to understand that what matters most is how you feel about yourself. Take a moment, step back, and evaluate how you’re living your life. Are you happy with yourself? Are you proud of who you are? If not, begin making differences in yourself today. They don’t have to be huge; small steps are usually the key to success. Maybe today, instead of complaining to someone else about the issues in your life, how about you take the time to listen to someone else for a little bit? We always talk about doing this one day in the near future. Why not have today be the day?
